Weather Subsides and Green Flag Drops on 2010 SRP Opener
By Jessica Nickels & Rick Faeth

The threat of weather had already stolen the thunder of SRP’s spring open show, but Promoter Rick Faeth was determined to keep Mother Nature from stealing the rescheduled April 3rd season opener.  The skies were grey and there were threats of rain but nothing stopped the green flag from dropping and igniting what is going to be a very exciting season. The night started with the fan favorite  I-5 Tire Factory Hornet division, which featured 17 cars.  Taking top honors was #22 car of Ed Pulfer followed by Barbara Bruner-Smith of Vacaville, and 2009 Hornet Champ Pete Smith Sr. third, fourth was JJ Crile, and rounding the top five was Wendy Oliver-Smith of Oroville.

Keeping the excitement going, the Les Schwab Bombers followed, putting on an amazing race full of nothing but nail biting edge of your seat action.  Leading the pack for the first few laps was the #48 car, Dave Lewallen who led most of the race with the #6B car of Rich “Fireball” Oller following close behind.  During the first 15-lap segment Oller’s engine, true to his nickname went up in a ball of smoke and fire, and causing him to retire to the infield.  This opened the door for Chris Michael in the #37 car to step in and hold second for the remainder of the race.  At the half way point of the 30 lap main event the field turned around to continue in the customary opposite direction.  At the half-way point Lewallen was still in the lead followed by Chris Michael, with the #5 car driven by Duane Hoffman and Josh Dorman in the #29 car following even closer.  Suddenly Lewallen slowed with mechanical failure for the second time of the night forcing his retirement.  Late in the race from nowhere emerges Dorman to seemingly capture his first checkered flag.  However, post-race tech inspection found that Dorman was non-compliant and he was disqualified.  The win was awarded to Chris Michael, last year’s rookie of the year. This was Chris’ first of what will no doubt be many SRP wins.  Duane Hoffman finished second, Dave Capell third, Chester Brown fourth, and Lewallen fifth.

The SRP Legend division followed and 2009 champion Micah Parmer opened up his 2010 season with convincing win over fast improving rival Buddy Cox. Finishing the race behind Parmer and Cox was Howard Hammer in third, John Morrissey fourth, and ‘Bullet’ Bob Kuebler was fifth.

The Sonic Late Models took center stage with another close race and fight for the win, Eric Gannon 2009 Champion, had Mike Doss and Mike Lovell nipping at his heels all night long.  Graduate of the SRP Bomber Division David Dillinger Jr. made his debut in the in the I-5 Tire Factory #87 car and found the wall late in the event.  Gannon sealed the win by virtue of a late race caution and took the first step in defending his crown.

The night ended with a blazing, non-stop 30-lap BCRA midget feature that took just 7:50 to run.  Long-time BCRA pavement midget specialist Chad Nichols capped a memorable night with a clean sweep: fast time, trophy dash, heat race, and main event wins.  2008 BCRA Champ Nick Foster Jr. was second, Snake Livernash a young WMRA midget driver from Washington State was third, SRP Modified Champ Guy Young was fourth and Scott Nail rounded out the top five.
Overall it was a chilly but great night at SRP and a fantastic start to the season.  Next week kicks off the season for the Taylor Motors Modifieds, Napa Mini-Stocks, BPT Carburetor  Pro-4 Modifieds, Les Schwab Bombers, I-5 Tire Factory Hornets, and the night will conclude with a 4-cylinder demolition derby starring the SRP track officials.  For more information visit the track website at www.shastaracewaypark.net.

Steven Gannon Recieves the "Sportsman of the Year" award from promoter Bob Carrel

Steven Gannon Recieves the "Sportsman of the Year" award from promoter Bob Carrel

Steven Gannon, Mini Stock, Late Model and Super Late Model champion has capped off a fantastic winter season of racing with the Red Bluff Outlaws, indoor dirt Sprint Karts – see www.rboutlaws.com for more information.

Racing these high-tech karts since a very young age, Steven has excelled in every division and this season took the highest honor in the sport with a triumphant run in the A Main Event of the West Coast Outlaw Kart Nationals.  The next day Steven was awarded the “Sportsman of the Year” award for the 30 year old series.  Such an honor is evidence of the professionalism of this young driver.  In a sport which features some of the hardest charging, adrenalin pumped competition, to keep a cool head race after race, year after year is nothing less than saintly.

The weekend was a huge success, not only for Gannon, but for hundreds of kart drivers.  As the sport of Outlaw Karting grows and spreads across the country the skills of the drivers outside of California grows.  Many tracks have sprung up in the past few years, many with some very challenging track conditions.  Many tracks are nearly completely flat, some have thick gumbo clay, others have an abundance of tire-eating sand and gravel.  As competition increases at all the national tracks many drivers are in the same league as those who grew up on the native tracks in California.  It was exciting to watch drivers who have never raced at Red Bluff swoop in and set fast times, win Dash for Cash races, and Qualifying Main Events.

These include Open Division driver Kevin Hartnell who nabbed the Low Trophy Dash win in his first excursion to Red Bluff.  Also finishing very well in that race were out-of-towners, Ryan Newman, Mitchell Wilcox, Chris Ratteree and Nate Lynch.  The Top Trophy Dash was packed with local Red Bluff Outlaws and saw long-time racer Michael Tarter wheel to the victory over Ryan Foster and Kyle Larson. The race was interrupted with a red flag stop after Rico Abreu, Keith Bloom and Zach West executed a brutal 3-way kart flip.  Bloom came out the worse for wear, but was able to walk himself away from the wreckage.

Five packed Qualifying Main Events were slated out to accommodate the 70+ karts.  In the E Main Event Todd Bosshart in the 7R kart led the pack to the win over Matt Hein, James Edens (running a 500cc kart at the bullring for the first time) and Cory Lockwood.  These drivers plus Kyle Hossfeld and Cody Braund transferred up to the D Main.  Brent Hamiliton- a returning long-time Outlaw – took the win for this second main event, edging out Randy Phillips and veteran Beau Perkins.  Jason Mittry, Daniel Thorson and Shawn Fogarty would fill out the rest of the transfers to the C Main.

Dean Bare who has run with the Outlaws for a very long time took home the win in the highly competitive C Main.  Jacob Pochop, and Seth Nunes rounded out the top three as they stayed well ahead of the mayhem that raged behind them.  As the penultimate race for the division started, it was clear that the competitors in this B Main Event were all on a mission – they had to get to those top six spots to earn a transfer to the A Main, and a chance to win a Golden Eagle trophy.  Tyler Harris, whose kart was simply a rocket on rails, kept a good distance from Pistol Pete Johnston and Zach West who finished 2nd and 3rd.  Daniel ‘Buckwheat’ Becker and Dean Bare, who started mired in the back of the pack, but drove hard and smooth thru the traffic to join Seth Nunes and the leaders as emissaries to the A Main Event.

But the Ultimate Race in the sport was all about Steven Gannon.  This talented driver began racing at the 8 at the Red Bluff track and Cycleland.  His father, Roger Gannon raced with the Red Bluff Outlaws in its early years while he was earning his title as ‘most championed driver’ at Shasta Speedway.  Following in his father’s footsteps, Steven began racing asphalt stock cars in his early teens in addition to championship career in dirt karts.  He nabbed a Mini Stock Championship and transferred quickly into Late Models and soon to Super Late Models.  He proved to be as much a natural on asphalt as on dirt with continuous stream of track championships, Open Show wins and dozens of prestigious wins.

With the drop of the green flag Gannon pulled out to the lead.  The track, which had held moisture better than expected over the long race weekend, had dried on the surface creating a cyclone of thick dust and a challenging track for the powerful 500cc karts.  Kenny McArthur, who has only raced a handful of races this past season due to his continuing college education at CalPoly, dogged his longtime competitor from the secondspot for most of the race.  While working every angle, he was just not able to get the strong starts which Steven used to his advantage during the many yellow flag restarts, nor get to the spot in the track where the wily Gannon wasn’t running so as to get the top spot. Behind McArthur was the young phenom Cameron Bartlett driving a hard-charging battle.  This youngster picked up the “Rookie of the Year” title for this season effort as a 13 year old (breaking the age barrier by virtue of his 250cc Division championship last season) against drivers who were winning championships before he was even born. When the checkered flag dropped it was 1-2-3, Steven Gannon, McArthur and Bartlett.   After the dust settled and the drivers were all brought to the infield to receive their coveted eagle trophies, Pete Johnston doused the unsuspecting Gannon with a spray of fine champaign.  It was one of those special moments in racing where to longtime friends, competitors and rivals share a memory that will last forever.

The next day, at the 30thannual Awards Ceremony for the Outlaws, Steven would be awarded the Sportsman of the Year award, and Johnston would recieve his Points Championship eagle for his 2010 season.  These two drivers epitomized the sport that day: both fierce competitors with extrodinary skills, - both driven to push the limits of their karts, and both outstanding ambassadors for the sport we all love.

by Julie DePrada, Need 2 Speed

Need 2 Speed is proud to bring home the first place trophy from the 1st Annual PKE2010 first ever indoor stadium kart race at South Point Arena in Las Vegas.

Teams consist of the following racers;

Team 1: Eric Gannon, Steven Gannon, and Boris Podtetenieff – 1st Place

Team 2: Keith Foux, Chase Hill & Charles Mosley – Semi-Finals

Team 3: Justyn Bradley, Jeff Swanson & Aaron Van Slyke – 7th in Round 1

The PKE2010 hosted 44 teams including some from as far as Florida. Most of the major karting facilities were there to represent. Pole Position with multiple location across the US, K1 Speed of Southern Cal. and RPM of Sacramento all brought several teams to compete. The variety of drivers and the experience level was intense with a very challenging track that pushed the drivers to use both skill and stamina to win.

While the whole day of qualifying was intense, it was the final heat that took the spectators to the edge of there seats. In the Final round, Eric Gannon qualified 6th out of 12. On the first lap, Eric made a great move on the inside to pass 5 karts and take the lead into turn 2. From that point he never looked back. The top 5 karts ran close the whole race with positions 2-5 changing almost every lap. On the last lap, Eric Gannon lost the lead in turn 1. He stayed close and made his move in the last corner. Eric got under the leader for a drag race to the finish line. Leading by only a few feet, the 2nd place driver reached out and grabbed the rear bumper of Eric’s kart causing his kart to slow just enough for the 2nd place kart to gain momentum to take the lead. It was a photo finish! Eric had lost by an inch. Pulling into the pits, Eric did not know of the “illegal grab” that had taken place. After review by the officials, the Win was awarded to Eric Gannon. The other driver had used this move 2 other times during the race and was disqualified.

Need 2 Speed teams had #1 qualifying positions, won 2 heat races and had the fastest lap time of the event. “This proves that Redding breeds drivers!” as quoted by Eric Gannon.

Third Place Finish for EGR Team Driver
Oct. 5th, 2009
Gannon Racing at the Shasta Raceway Park Fall Open Show“We had the car to beat for the Main Event. Steven had a super run leading from the start right up till about lap 103 when Randy Houston was able to get by us.” Said Eric Gannon, owner of the EGR Racing Team. “Right around lap 85 or so the sway bar started to back off and the car just got too loose and hard to turn. It was disappointing to say the least, but overall the team had a great weekend.”

After practice and test and tune late Friday Eric said “We couldn’t be more pleased with how things are coming together for the team this weekend.” We know we are under-powered by about 100 horsepower in the #2 and the #8, but we are really impressed that both cars posted top ten times in practice. Steven in the #75 is our best chance for a victory this weekend and we are looking forward to a repeat of last year.” The team owner and driver of the #2 continued.

Having just been crowned 2009 Shasta Raceway Park Late Model Champion, Eric had a frantic week trying to prep 3 cars for the biggest race of the year.  The #75 for Steven, the #8 for Alan Pyszora and his own BTS Motorsports / Napa Auto Parts sponsored #2.  The traditional open show at the Anderson racing facility is a long-standing appointment with for the Gannon family. Roger, Eric and Steven’s father, has a number Open Show wins at the track from several decades he competed on the asphalt oval in the fairgrounds.

This year more than 25 of the fastest Super Late Models registered in to compete in this year’s SRP Fall Open Show sponsored by I-5 Tire Factory (visit their website here) and Auto City (visit their website here).  Many of these drivers are slated on the Airport Auto Brokers Late Model Series roster and other local drivers outfitted their existing Late Models so they compete on an more even field with the Supers.

Qualifying took place on Saturday afternoon. During this crucial part of competition Steven set the second fastest lap of the pack with a 15.921 second lap. Alan Pyszora set 9th quick time and Eric nabbed the 10th fast lap clocking in at 16.140. “Coming off the track I wasn’t too confident on my qualifying time, but I couldn’t have been much happier when it locked in for 10th fastest.”  Said Eric of his BTS Motorsports sponsored #2.

Following the time trial qualifyings there were 2 ‘Qualifying Heat Races.’  All three cars were posted into the fast heat.  Eric finished in the 3rd spot, Steven in 7th place and Alan following up in 8th.  “Racing all three cars in a single heat was great. It gave us an idea of how things might pan out the next day.”

Sunday morning’s practice continued to bolster the team’s confidence and especially Eric’s as he was 6th fastest in the short practice time.  Alan’s qualifying times and finish in the heat put the National Guard sponsored #8 on the pole at the front of the pack. As the flag waved Steven charged to the front where he held dominion till about lap 85 when the sway bar started to backup and the car got looser and more and more difficult to steer. Still last year’s Fall Open winner managed to hold off the incredibly hard-charging Randy Houston till just after the one hundred lap mark.  “As Randy said, ‘It was an Epic Battle’ between himself and Steven.” The handling on the car continued to challenge Steven but he still kept super-fast Canadian Darrell Midgley and Kyle Cattanach behind him to take a third place finish.

Eric’s feature event had a prodigious start as he climbed up to the third spot till contact came in turn one relegating him to the back of the pack from which he charged a hard-fought battle all the way up to the 8th spot when rear end mechanicals forced him to end his night early.  “The rear end gear just burned up.  I knew if I kept on racing I was going to do more damage to the car, so I just pulled off.”  Alan Pyszora’s car followed suit not many laps later as the head gasket gave way and he too pulled to the pits.  “Well, it’s not the finished I’d hoped for.” Said the former Track Champion, Pyszora. “But I had a lot of fun starting up front and just being able to run with my teammates against all these drivers.”

“We really have to thank all our sponsors and our team and pit crew. Without their help and support we wouldn’t have been able to do even dream of running a show at this level.” Said a grateful Eric after the race.  Brian from BTS has been such a great help both in terms of sponsorship and support, M&J Electric for all the help all year, and NAPA Auto Parts who helped fund this particular event for us.”

Sep 302009

There was scant time for celebrating after Eric Gannon clinched the 2009 Late Model Championship on Sat. night.  Early the next day he and the team were at the shop working feverishly to get the BTS sponsored late model ready for the upcoming Fall Open Show at SRP.    But, it doesn’t stop there. All three drivers from the BTS / Eric Gannon team will be taking to the track for the 125 lap open event.  Steven Gannon will be driving the #75 – a car which he took to Victory Circle in last years U.S. Army 150 – the previously named Fall Open Show.  After battling with Randy Houston for the final laps, Gannon held on to take the win.

Alan Pyszora will also be taking out his #8 car to compete against the bigger guns that normally run the Airport Auto Brokers Touring Series.

“Although Alan and I both have great cars, we know we need to wrench on them a bit to really be able to shine against the AABLM drivers.
